“What impressed me most about Grant Erskine Architects is the professionalism, knowledge, experience, unbeatable pricing and the communication throughout. I know their services are endless, but importantly they return calls, provide free initial advice and deliver what they agree to do. I would not hesitate in recommending them where the opportunity should arise.

Top qualities: Great Results, Good Value, On Time”

Joanne Nuttall

“I would describe Grant Erskine Architects as extremely professional, but personable and approachable at the same time and as people who "think outside the box" and really go that extra step to delivery results with quality. In all honesty I would recommend them to anybody including friends and family and we are extremely happy about the project that they recently completed for our business.

Top qualities: Great Results, Personable, High Integrity

"What is it like to be an Architect?"

Savvy Guest ‏@SavvyGuest

"@GEArchitects Can you give some industry #advice to those wanting to know what it's really like to work in your industry?"

Thanks to SavvyGuest for asking us the question viaTwitter.

“What’s it like to be an Architect?” is a tough one.

Firstly I should begin this with a caveat; I am writing this as a Grant Erskine, the director of Grant Erskine Architects, of sound body and … wait wrong one, a qualified male Architect in my early 30’s, having worked in the architecture and construction industry for 15+ years originally in Northern Ireland and then in Manchester, England.

So, to begin with. It’s awesome. I love it. I love being an Architect. Most Architects do. Don’t get me wrong, it is tough, I believe one of the toughest professions around, but if you stick to it, you will love it too. I don’t want to sound too “sappy” about it, but it’s almost as if you don’t learn to be an Architect, you become one. It becomes part of you, part of your very essence. You live it. You can’t help it. It takes you over. It’s as if someone opens a door in your head and you see a secret world that only you and people like you know.

That’s probably why we are all a little crazy. Just “a little quirky”. We all have a “thing”. An OCD, a comfort, a secret pleasure which is just “un poco loco”. We normally drink too much, we work too hard, we like the simple things and the finer things, we want to see and experience it all – enough is never enough. We all have 100’s of books, we continually doodle, we watch, look, learn, analyse, adapt, interpret - all the time. We never ever switch off. We are passionate and excitable, often about what might appear the smallest of things.

We create all the time. It’s as if we have an unending desire to fix things, improve things, solve things. Don’t ask an Architect for an opinion – it will be a criticism – we can’t help it. We all do it. It’s what we do. We are always trying to make things better. And here is the worst part – you have to take all this crazy and put it into the real world, where no-one else understands it. It’s why Architects often get a tough time from everyone else in the team. We don’t mean to be nutty – we just like things to be right.

The construction industry is a tough one to be in at the minute. It is “on the bounce”, work is picking up, but it's slow going. But the good thing is – as an Architect, you have a skill base which allows you to be resilient. No two days are ever the same anyway, you have to learn to adapt to new scenarios all the time - that’s why we can do so much. We write, we teach, we design furniture, we contract manage, we paint, we have so many transferable skills that we can use and so many of us do – it’s not just building things.

Sometimes you are designing, sometimes you are making things work, sometimes you are facilitating a contract, sometimes you are mediating warring parties, sometimes you are applying legislation, sometimes you are just a shoulder to cry on, sometimes you find yourself doing PR for a project and you don’t know why, sometimes you are writing blogs on what it is like to work in your industry.

Why? – Because you love it.
