“What impressed me most about Grant Erskine Architects is the professionalism, knowledge, experience, unbeatable pricing and the communication throughout. I know their services are endless, but importantly they return calls, provide free initial advice and deliver what they agree to do. I would not hesitate in recommending them where the opportunity should arise.

Top qualities: Great Results, Good Value, On Time”

“I would describe Grant Erskine Architects as extremely professional, but personable and approachable at the same time and as people who "think outside the box" and really go that extra step to delivery results with quality. In all honesty I would recommend them to anybody including friends and family and we are extremely happy about the project that they recently completed for our business.

Top qualities: Great Results, Personable, High Integrity

"Is my Architect an Architect?"

The question you may be considering is, should I use an Architect, or architectural services, or a draftsman, or my mate Bill in the pub who does a bit of drawing on the side, to do my work for me?

So many people misuse the word Architect, or use it when they have no right to use it to mislead you. Only someone who has been admitted to the Architects Registration Board can officially use the word Architect. Anyone can offer architectural services, but only a member of the board can offer the services of an Architect.

So back to the first question, who should I use? Well let’s put it into perspective, if you were in need of surgery, would you use as surgeon, or a GP, or a nurse or a first-aider? Perhaps a crude analogy, but no doubt you get the idea.

Of all the people listed above, only one has the sufficient training and ability to provide you with the correct service, but more importantly, only one of them is a professional, with a governing body, a code of conduct and an ethical position. In essence you have protection if you use an Architect, but you do not have any protection if you use any of the others. If anything goes wrong or you feel you have not had the service you expected, with an Architect you have a route for recourse, but with the others you have nothing.

As an Architect, we agree to adhere to a Code of Conduct which states that we must:

• Be honest and act with integrity

• Be competent

• Promote your services honestly and responsibly

• Manage your business competently

• Consider the wider impact of your work

• Carry out your work faithfully and conscientiously

• Be trustworthy and look after your clients’ money properly

• Have appropriate insurance arrangements

• Maintain the reputation of architects

• Deal with disputes or complaints appropriately

• Co-operate with regulatory requirements and investigations

• Have respect for others

It all sounds very “secret society”, but it is important and we always recommend to any potential client to ensure that they are getting quotes from Architects and not non-architects. If you are going to spend your money, surely you want to take every opportunity to ensure that it is well spent.

So how do you check if the person you are talking to is an Architect? They may tell you they are, they may even have it in their company name, or they may use words such as architectural services or architectural drawing in an attempt to mislead you. To check is simple, go the ARB website, click on check the register and type in their name.
